Masih inget ga sama IYS (International Youth Service) Penpals?

Back then, there was an organization based in Finland called the International Youth Service or IYS, which provided a penpal matching service for students aged 10 to 20, for a fee of one US dollar per address (about 25 pesos back then). If you get a group of 10 students to apply for a penpal, you also get an additional address for free. You can choose whether you want a boy or a girl, their age, and the country they live in. You also indicate your interests, and the IYS will search their database for a penpal suitable for you. When you sign up, your name will also be included in their database, so you can actually get more than one penpal for a one-time fee!

Kalo gw pas jaman SD-SMP tuh. Seneng banget deh bisa punya penpal dari luar negeri😀 gara2 form IYS gw buanyak banget, sampe2 gw masukkin di surat pembaca majalah Gadis, akhirnya gw jd agennya IYS😀 berpuluh-puluh surat berdatangan utk ikutan IYS sampe gw kelimpungan…hehehe. Sayang bgt berkas2nya udah ga tau kemana😦

Menurut gw menulis surat itu sebenernya nyenengin deh, trus nungguin pak pos datang…so exciting😀 sekarang sih juga masih exciting nungguin pak pos datang membawa belanjaan onlineku…hahahah. Yg masih gw pertahankan adalah setiap traveling gw usahakan untuk selalu mengirim postcard ke adek gw or nyokap kalo mereka ga ikutan pergi. tapi kalo perginya serombongan…yah paling beli postcard ajah sih buat dikoleksi. Eng ing engg…suddenly gw teringat dimanakan itu koleksi postcard2 gw dan koleksi foto2 film silat jaman gw SD…hmm besok kudu dicari deh ini. Kalo koleksi perangko jaman SD sih udah ketemu. Ooopss jd blabber ke koleksi2 gw….hihihi sorry. Eniweys…sekarang jaman udah canggih, orang jadi jarang ngirim surat, ngirim kartu2 ucapan (selamat ultah, hari raya idul fitri, natal) lewat pos.

Well, sayang banget deh udah tutup IYSnya😦

IYS words published on their website just before shutting down:

“IYS will be closing down this summer, by 30th June 2008
The International Youth Service (IYS) has been operating since 1952, over 56 years now. We have arranged foreign pen friends for school children and students aged 10 – 20 years in over 100 different countries.
The Internet has lead to a situation where sending ordinary letters is old-fashioned. Letter writing, once very popular, is now a hobby of a few.
We have come to the end of a certain period. As we can not find enough young people interested in penfriendship any more, we have decided to close down this firm by 30th June 2008.
We thank all our customers, both children and teachers, in past years and wish you happy times. Don’t stop learning different languages and cultures and keep up those penfriendships you have managed to build up.

The staff of INTERNATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE”

  1. Hiks!!! Gw dulu juga ikutan penpals gini. Sayang ya tutup. Gw baru inget lagi setelah baca post, lo ini, Ran. If only I recalled it much earlier, bisa info2 ke sekolah2 ya. Emang bener ya, internet udah merubah cara kita berkomunikasi jarak jauh.
